Following the exclusive showing of the Avatar 2: The Way of Water Official Trailer over the weekend in theaters before the premiere of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Disney has now made the trailer available online. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, which happened to be the highest-grossing film of all time after its debut in 2009, the sequel tells the story of the Sully Family — Jake, Neytiri, and their children — as their land becomes torn apart. According to the logline of the movie, “a once familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their planet.”
Avatar 2: The Way of Water returns to the fictional planet of Pandora, with much of the movie taking place in the planet’s oceans. The film’s director and producer, James Cameron, developed new technology in order to film motion scenes underwater, something never previously achieved. Cameron stated that the new films are “pushing limits even farther with high frame rate, higher resolution 3D and greater reality in our visual effects. I wanted our return to Pandora to be something really special. Every shot is designed for the biggest screen, highest resolution, and most immersive 3D available. I think we pulled it off.”
Avatar 2: The Way of Water stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet. The original film will also be re-released in theaters on September 23, before the sequel premieres on December 16.
