The big news from Mercedes-Benz is the return of the four-cylinder SL. The last time you could buy a Mercedes-Benz SL with a four-banger was in 1963 with the original 190SL. This new reboot is dubbed the 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL43 and features an electric turbocharger to produce competitive performance figures. The new Mercedes-AMG SL43 is the first production car to use its new turbo technology derived from Mercedes-Benz’s Formula One team. The new tech works by placing an electric motor between the turbocharger’s wheels. As a result, boost pressure is always available. A 48-volt hybrid system powers this new electric turbocharger.

No more turbo lag means the AMG SL43’s 2.0-liter M139 four-cylinder engine is always ready to perform with 375-hp and a claimed top speed of 170 mph. Moreover, the four-cylinder engine is placed longitudinally (like in the old days) and sends its power to the rear wheels via a new nine-speed multi-clutch automatic transmission.

Like its larger V8 siblings, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL43 is built with an aluminum chassis. Moreover, many suspension components are made from aluminum to help keep the car’s weight low. In addition, the SL43 ditches the hardtop for a soft-top convertible. The SL43 stands apart from the lineup with redesigned front and rear bumpers, circular exhaust tips, and standard 19-inch alloy wheels. In addition, the car features a pop-up rear spoiler capable of angling itself at 26.5 degrees.

Standard interior equipment on the SL43 includes an 11.9-inch center touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument display. In addition, buyers have a choice in upholstery from Artico faux and fabric, Nappa leather, or regular leather. For an additional cost, buyers can opt for AMG-Performance bucket seats. Pricing for the 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL43 has not been released yet. However, we expect to see the new four-cylinder SL in dealers by fall 2022 with a price tag lower than the V8 variants.
