Hyundai has unveiled the all-new 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz pickup truck. This mid-size, unibody, four-cylinder-powered truck is a refreshing reminder of an era when pickup trucks came in sizes other than XXL. The new 2022 Santa Cruz may not win a tug-a-war challenge against a standard full-size pickup truck, but it seems this truck isn’t about that life. The concept of the Hyundai Santa Cruz was first introduced at the Detroit Auto Show in 2015. Full details on this truck are slowly trickling in, but here is what we know so far. The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz is only offered as a four-door crew cab. Exact performance figures have not been disclosed. However, the standard engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, which Hyundai states, produces more than 190-horsepower and 180+ lb.-ft of torque. The alternative option is a turbocharged variant of the 2.5-liter engine, making an estimated 275+ hp and 310+ lb.-ft of torque. Both engines can be optioned with all-wheel drive and use an eight-speed automatic transmission, with the turbo variants using a dual-clutch setup. Max towing capacity is estimated at 5,000 lbs with the turbocharged engine and 3,500 lb for the standard engine.
The interior features an elegant layout with a noticeable lack of toggles, switches, and dials in favor of touch screen controls. That may be a drawback for some people. Thankfully, the shifter is a traditional lever mounted on the center control. The 2022 Santa Cruz features a fully digital gauge cluster and infotainment screens ranging from eight to ten inches, depending on trim level. An eight-speaker Bose audio system and complimentary three-year Hyundai Blue Link service add luxury to ruggedness.
The exterior design can make one think of an El Camino. It’s a crossover SUV with a topless cargo area. Hyundai designed the 2022 Santa Cruz mid-size pickup truck to be flexible. A mid-size truck can feel at home on a campsite or at the heart of a major city. Hyundai has said that the 2022 Santa Cruz and will go on sale as early as June 2021. Pricing and exact performance figures will be released sometime before then.
