Tokyo-based abstract artist Mayumi Yamase and Nike have come together to release a collection featuring the Nike Air Force 1 Low and Nike Blazer Low, both using Flyleather, dubbed the 2021 Nike Flyleather Collection. Flyleather, introduced in 2017, is an engineered leather material that uses at least 50% of recycled leather fibers. That in turn has a lower impact on the climate and reduces the carbon footprint compared to leather. The uppers on both the fan-favorites Air Force 1 Low and Blazer Low use a white base with grey suede hits on the lace overlays and tip, with Yamase’s whimsical and colorful touch painted all over the upper. The Air Force 1 Low uses a gum midsole and outsole for contrast and the Blazer Low sticks with the white midsole and outsole for a clean summer vibe.
According to Mayumi, the playful details are inspired by a belief in community as a creative, dynamic variable in her projects. “Community gives me a sense of comfort and fun in my daily life, but it also stretches my imagination and surprises me, leading to discoveries in my own artwork that challenge my expectations,” she says. The Mayumi Yamase x Nike Flyleather Summer 2021 Collection will release beginning May 19th.
