The 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE 2+2 Polizia is a true legend if ever we saw one. In 1962, at the request of legendary Roman police chief Armando Spatafora, Italy’s president reached out to Enzo Ferrari and requested two cars fast enough to keep pace with the bad guys speeding through the city streets. Given the Ferrari 250 GTE 2+2’s role as the course marshal at the 1960 racing of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it seemed like the perfect car for the job.

After attending a high-speed driving course with three of his colleagues, Spatafora took possession of this particular Ferrari squad car, and so began a partnership that would go down in history. The car’s 3.0-liter V12 engine reaches speeds in excess of 155 mph by churning out 237 hp. Its black exterior is complemented by a tan leatherette interior, and has a working siren, radio, and emergency lights, along with Squadra Mobile decals on the doors.

But this car is about more than its features. During the six years that Spatafora drove this 1962 250 GTE 2+2, the car became legendary. In fact, it was considered a sign of distinction in Rome’s criminal underworld to beat this beauty in a chase. It was retired in 1968 before being sold to Alberto Cappelli in 1972. Even in the custody of a new owner, this Ferrari held a special place in Spatafora’s heart. He was reunited with his old squad car in 1984, racing in that year’s edition of the Coppa d’Or delle Dolomiti where he won the silver medal.

To this day, this Ferrari 250 GTE 2+2 is the only private car in Italy allowed to drive with the siren, blue light and “Squadra Volante” livery. And for what we’re guessing is a very large sum, you can add it to your collection. Girardo & Co has listed the legendary Ferrari for an undisclosed amount. It comes with a Ferrari Classiche Certification as well as a comprehensive history file containing original build sheets, Polizia documentation, and images of Armando Spatafora with this 250 GTE Polizia from the early 1960’s.
