Studhorse by Olson Kundig

For those that live in cities, unless we consider the occasional rain and snow that makes city living more difficult, nature is something we need to actively seek out. This is not the case for those living in the Studhorse, a house designed by Seattle-based Olson Kundig where residents get to enjoy an intimate relationship with nature.

Set in a 20-acre site four hours away from Seattle in Winthrop, WA, the house is a response to the “clients’ desire to experience and engage the surrounding environment throughout all four seasons.” The home blurs the boundaries between the built structure and surrounding nature, with four separate buildings that are oriented towards a central courtyard, much like how pioneers would circle the wagons. Although stunning by itself, the structure blends harmoniously into the landscape and becomes a sanctuary to experience mother nature all year around.
