Sony has just unveiled its latest camera offering with the Sony A9 III Mirrorless Camera. Priced at $6,000, this full-frame camera boasts a stacked 24.6-megapixel sensor, succeeding its predecessor, the A9 II, which was released four years ago. However, the standout feature of the A9 III is its groundbreaking global shutter.
This marks the first time a full-frame camera utilizes a global shutter, a significant advancement in imaging technology. Unlike rolling shutters found in most mirrorless cameras, which capture images row by row, the global shutter of the A9 III exposes every pixel simultaneously, eliminating distortion in both stills and videos. This innovation empowers the A9 III to deliver impressive capabilities, including 4K 120fps video with no crop, 120fps 14-bit RAW shooting for 192 frames with real-time AF, flash synchronization at any shutter speed, and a maximum shutter speed of 1/80,000 (1/16,000 during continuous shooting).
Sony’s A9 series has always prioritized speed, and the A9 III continues this tradition. While global shutters can sometimes underperform in low-light conditions and dynamic range, Sony’s spec sheet claims the A9 III can capture images at up to 51,200 ISO, reaffirming its focus on speed. the Sony A9 III Mirrorless Camera is slated for release next spring.
