Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche… Despite these automotive aristocrats attempting to grab our attention, the motor show throne still seems to belong to automotive royalty, Rolls-Royce. Rolls-Royce has proven its worthiness again at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show with the Rolls-Royce Dawn. The über luxury convertible is a reinterpretation of the Silver Dawn from the 1950s, a car that was only produced in a limited number of 28. The result is a “striking, seductive encounter like no other Rolls-Royce to date” according to Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, which sounds like a convincing statement by looking at the car.
The exterior reminds us of the Wraith, but Rolls-Royce was eager to point out that the car is not a Wraith Drophead and shares only 20% of its body panels. The car still has the upright and dignified radiator grill typical of Rolls-Royce in front, while the long hood and rear overhang and high belt line add to the overall imposing presence of the car. The very idea of pausing to drop its convertible top seem undignified, so the car can silently lower its cloth top while on the move up to 30 mph. Don’t let all this dignified exterior fool you into thinking that the car will shy away from a good fight as the 6.6L V12 twin-turbo engine that produced 563 hp will leave any hooligan on the road with a bloody nose.
With the roads filled with Bentleys these days, it might be about time to get yourself into one of these Rolls-Royces and show those Bentley Boys who’s boss.
