At Milan Design Week, Snøhetta and USM Modular Furniture have introduced ‘Renaissance of the Real,’ a multisensory installation conceived with artist Annabelle Schneider. Located at the Fondazione Luigi Rovati museum, the project challenges the hyper‑connectivity of modern life by offering a space dedicated to presence.

The architecture uses the USM Haller modular system as a skeletal grid, over which a soft textile membrane is stretched. The membrane subtly expands and contracts like a breathing organism, creating a cocoon that mediates between the steel framework and the surrounding garden.

Visitors begin with a ritual cleanse: a warm towel offered upon entry signals a transition from the frenetic pace of Milan to the installation’s calm interior. Inside, curated sound frequencies, diffused light, scents and tactile surfaces encourage guests to slow down and attune their senses. Devon ‘OJAS’ Turnbull hosts vinyl listening sessions each evening from April 20 to 24, further anchoring the experience in analogue media.

Snøhetta’s design highlights the tension between structure and vulnerability. By transforming USM’s modular office furniture into an experiential environment, the installation underscores the adaptability of the system while critiquing digital overload.

In an industry dominated by product launches, ‘Renaissance of the Real’ distinguishes itself by offering attendees an introspective refuge and reminding them that presence cannot be downloaded.
