Mercedes-Maybach has introduced its first plug-in hybrid variant for the S-Class 580. Dubbed the Maybach S 580 e, this mega land yacht does not wear its PHEV on its sleeve. Nor does it boast its new electrification like other vehicles. Instead, the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e is a subtle plug-in hybrid that does not stray away from its primary objective – luxury.

Under the status-making hood sits a Mercedes-Benz turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. The engine produces 362 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft of torque. The S 580 e adds a 148 hp electric motor for a total output of 503 hp and 553 lb.-ft of torque for the Mercedes-Maybach PHEV. While not as powerful as its fuel burning V8 variants, the Maybach S 580 e still delivers a zero to sixty time of 5.1 seconds and a limited top speed of 155 mph.

Moreover, the Maybach S 580 e 28-kWh battery pack provides 62 miles of fully electric range at a top speed of 87 mph. Charging is possible using an onboard 11-kW charger. Mercedes-Maybach claims charging refills can be completed in 30 minutes using a 60-kW DC charger. The car’s charging port is concealed on the left side of the sedan.

For styling, the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e does not stand out from its gasoline-powered siblings. The biggest hint that this is a PHEV is the blue accents around the headlamps and battery charging symbols displayed on the digital dashboard. The Maybach S 580 e will be released in China first, followed by Europe, leaving the US last on the list.
