“The way I see it if you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?” So stylish was Doc Brown’s iconic DeLorean time machine that it spanned three impressive flicks—and a massive fandom that, decades later, shows no signs of waning. Now toymaker LEGO is giving fans yet another reason to celebrate. The company’s new Back to the Future Time Machine honors the film with a thoughtfully designed DeLorean replica made up of a whopping 1,872 pieces. Part of the LEGO Creator Expert range, it is a highly advanced model that took some six months to conceptualize and design.
The LEGO Back to the Future Time Machine is a mighty impressive little gadget, complete with an illuminated Flux Capacitor light brick and gull-wing doors that swing up to reveal Marty McFly’s travel dates printed on the dashboard. The set includes homages to each film: a lightning rod and plutonium chamber from the original, Mr. Fusion and a set of fold-down hover conversion tires from Part II, and whitewall tires and a hood-mounted circuit board that helped Marty reach the Wild West in Part III. As no BTTF kit would be complete without the time-traveling duo themselves, it also includes mini figurines of Marty and Doc.
There are also some playful companion accessories, like the banana Doc threw into Mr. Fusion in the second movie, a trio of license plates (yes, one says OUTATIME) so you can swap them out based on the version of the car you put together, and a miniature hoverboard. Eager fans will clamor to get their hands on this, but even LEGO enthusiasts will appreciate the rarity of the light-up Flux Capacitor and the intricate detailing that goes into the finished product. Great Scott, indeed.
