The Lamborghini automobile company has a long tradition of looking at current sports cars on the market and asking “how could this be better?”. A successful businessman who got his start as a manufacturer of tractors, Ferruccio Lamborghini was driven to establish Lamborghini Automobili in the mid-1960s by a desire to create a sports car that could outperform the seemingly untouchable Ferrari.
Over the years, Lamborghini Automobili has carried on the pioneering traditions of its founder, but it has never looked this far into the future before. The highly ambitious Lamborghini Terzo Millennio (or “third millennium”) looks as if it could transport you straight through the year 3000.
While maintaining Lamborghini’s dedication to delivering a high-performance, emotional driving experience, this “sports car of the future” offers significant developmental innovations in four key areas: energy, innovation in materials, powertrain/vehicle architecture, and sound/motion. The Lamborghini Terzo Millennio runs on electricity. To create a truly high-performance electric engine, Lamborghini is developing a state-of-the-art supercapacitor that rivals any conventional power source. The materials used to create the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio will incorporate CFK-based panels to diffuse nano-charges and to store electric energy directly within the body of the car. This power passes through an electric powertrain comprised of several electric machines to generate torque directly into each wheel for exceptional four-wheel-drive capability. With a deep rumble reminiscent one of today’s V12 engines, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio promises all the thrill and excitement of a classic gasoline racer.
