For some, the term “wingman” conjures up images of two guys heading out for a night on the town. One, the wingman, is prepared to watch out for the other, help him avoid dangerous situations, and ultimately rescue him if things get rough. If you ever wondered where the term wingman came from, you now need only look to the new trailer for Sony Pictures feature Devotion.
Devotion, an aerial war epic based on the bestselling book of the same name by Internationally bestselling author Adam Makos, tells the harrowing true story of two elite US Navy fighter pilots during the Korean War. Often called America’s Forgotten War, director J.D. Dillard hopes the film will remind viewers of the heroic sacrifices made during the era. For the film’s protagonists, these sacrifices would make them the Navy’s most celebrated wingmen.
“A white New Englander from the country-club scene, Lieutenant Tom Hudner passed up Harvard to fly fighters for his country. An African American sharecropper’s son from Mississippi, Jesse Brown became the Navy’s first black carrier pilot, defending a nation that wouldn’t even serve him in a bar,” said Makos the book’s description. “A tug-at-the-heartstrings tale of bravery and selflessness, Devotion asks: How far would you go to save a friend?”
The trailer features plenty of exciting piloting, glimpses of family life, and battle footage. The film stars Jonathan Majors, Glen Powell, Christina Jackson, Joe Jonas, Nick Hargrove, Spencer Neville, and Thomas Sadoski. Devotion the movie comes to theatres on November 23, 2022. The book is available from Amazon.
