The second camera to be released in Canon’s new R lineup, the EOS RP is Canon’s smallest full-frame camera. Canon is aiming for the beginner here, someone who would like to try full-frame digital photography but isn’t quite ready to shell out the big bucks. Roughly half the cost of an average full-frame mirrorless camera, the Canon EOS RP is designed to be compact, lightweight, and easy to use.
But the RP certainly doesn’t sacrifice quality for accessibility. It features a 26.2 megapixel CMOS sensor powered by a renowned Canon DIGIC 8 image processor and a Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus system with 4,779 selectable focus points.
As part of the EOS R series, the camera uses RF lenses natively and Canon EF and EF-S lenses with an adapter. And they all work surprisingly well, so if you already have Canon lenses, you won’t need to invest in a whole new set.
For video, the EOS RP provides 720p (30 or 60fps), 1080p (30 or 60fps), and 4K (24fps) capabilities. Strangely, there’s no 24fps option for the more manageable 1080p and 720p, which may turn down some users who’d like to use the RP mainly for video. Other than that, the EOS RP looks great on paper, featuring a built-in EVF, great low light performance, flip-out touch LCD screen, and weatherproofing.
