One of the main rules of thumb that defines a great whiskey is the length of the aging process, where the longer the beverage has spent in a cask, the better the final flavor profile. Combined with the types of wood used for the casks and the combination of additional ingredients, this process can transform an average dram into something truly special. The award-winning distillery Buffalo Trace has stepped up to the plate and delivered this excellent combination of elements with the release of its Buffalo Trace Eagle Rare 25 Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. As its name implies, this bourbon has been in the works for twenty-five years, resulting in a smooth drink that packs a surprisingly complex flavor profile.

The first of what whiskey enthusiasts hope will be many exclusive releases, the Buffalo Trace Eagle Rare 25 was distilled in one of two experimental warehouses run by the company. Each warehouse has been set up with the goal of extending the aging and maturation process beyond the typical duration used for American whiskeys and bourbon.

The result is a bourbon with a gorgeous combination of flavors that incorporates the intense cherry oak from the casks with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, dark fruit, and butterscotch. This initial kick is then followed by a lingering long finish that brings in black pepper, baking spice, and rickhouse floor, for a truly distinct whiskey.

Released as part of a new collection, the Buffalo Trace Eagle Rare 25 is accompanied by a seventeen-year-old version, along with rare and very rare box sets that come with a stylish decanter featuring crystal glass eagles.
