BMW M1 Art Car Turns 40

The car went on to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans back in 1979, which it took second in its model class and sixth overall.

If you’re interested in a car that is 100% unique and will turn heads every time it drives by, then the BMW M1 Art Car is exactly what you’re looking for. As pop art icon Andy Warhol’s personal BMW, the car features a paint job unlike anything else around. This year the BMW M1 Art Car turns 40.

Only four of these eccentric vehicles were ever produced. Andy Warhol, the equally eccentric artist, only spent 30 minutes creating the unique paint job, but nonetheless made the car’s lineage as important to art history as it is to automotive history. He wanted the car to have a paint design that didn’t look finished, as if it was ripping out of its paint as it drove. As Mr. Warhol said, he “attempted to show speed as a visual image.” The car then went on to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans back in 1979, which it took second in its model class and sixth overall.
