Those in the market for a new classic to enjoy the summer are gearing up for Mecum Indy 2023 in May. Over 3,000 vehicles are rolling across the auction block at Indy 2023. Among all the selections of chrome and patina is a stainless steel icon, a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 replica of Doc Brown’s cinematic time machine from the Back to the Future (BTTF) film trilogy.
This DeLorean DMC-12 movie car replica features all the bells and whistles seen in the movies. The car has functioning neon lighting, strobe lights embedded in the rear vents, smoke effects, and other staging components that allow the new owner to change the look of the DMC-12 from BTTF I or II. Inside, the car features stainless steel panels with time circuits to set a date for the time machine and the Flux capacitor tucked in between the factory bucket seats.
While the car may need plutonium to travel through space and time, its road-going hardware still needs gasoline. This 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 uses its original 3.8-liter V6 with a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system and five-speed manual transmission. In addition, the car rolls on its factory alloy wheels, gullwing-style doors, and four-wheel disc brakes.
Bonus items included with the final sale of the car include a copy of the Sports Almanac, as seen in the movie, and Christopher Lloyd’s autograph on the vehicle. The 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 time machine replica goes up for auction at Mecum Indy 2023 starting May 12.
