Tired of fake SUV’s that are nothing more than tall hatchbacks? Then treat yourself to an original 4×4 — something like a Toyota Land Cruiser of the 1970’s and ’80’s.
Classic car aficionados will point out the obvious — vehicles from this era were seriously lacking in comfort, safety, and reliability. So what you need is a classic that’s been not only restored, but updated. Something like the 1979 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40 from Legacy Overland.
In rebuilding this off-roader, Connecticut-based Legacy Overland upgraded components like brakes and suspension while staying true to the original utilitarian concept. Under the hood, you’ll find the rugged “Type B” 3.0 liter, four-cylinder diesel, hence the name BJ40 and not an FJ40. That engine is married to a four-speed transmission through an old-fashioned clutch, so don’t climb in unless you’re confident in your ability to row your own gears.
Other upgrades include LED lights, a Bluetooth-enabled RetroSound radio with five speakers, and premium upholstery. Tires, including the rear-mounted spare, are Cooper STT Pro’s that not only look cool but deliver impressive off-road traction. There’s even a jerry can held in place with a leather strap!
Finished in concours-quality Desert Storm Tan paint, this Legacy BJ40 does more than look the part. It’s genuinely trail-ready. Among a sea of fake SUV’s, this is the real thing.
