A top-tier collector car is up for sale by RM Sotheby in France, a 1969 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione, otherwise known as chassis 12467. This former race car has an impressive motorsport resume and the prestige of being one of the first steel-body Ferrari Daytonas built — the third one, in fact.

The car started in life as a development prototype serving two years as a test bed for new systems. Then it was purchased by Luigi Chinetti for his North American Racing Team to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Modifications for the race include a quick-release fuel filler cap, Dino 206 SP-style fuel capacitor, a 512M fuel pressure gauge, a new front spoiler and flared wheel arches to make room for larger width tires, and plexiglass side windows, in addition to a side-exit exhaust system, roll cage, and a fire extinguisher. The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione would prove its reliability and speed with a fifth overall finish at Le Mans.

After that, chassis 12467 saw steady work as a race car. It placed third in its class at the Daytona Six Hours and competed in the 12 Hours of Sebring. By 1973 the car was in private hands and stayed in the United States for 40 years before returning to Europe.

In 2022, the 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione underwent a complete restoration back to its 1971 Le Mans spec. The delicate work was done by Corrado Patella’s Autofficina Omega and Dino Cognolato’s Carrozzeria Nova Rinascente. Ferrari Classiche oversaw the process as chassis 12467 reunited with its original engine block and cylinder heads. According to RM Sotheby’s, the car is currently being inspected by Ferrari to earn its Red Book Classiche certification.

The car’s value is measured by its racing resume and being the first factory-prepared prototype of the Daytona Competizione. It’s the genesis of one of the most sought-after Ferrari nameplates, and there’s no need to sweat out a bidding war either. This 1969 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione has a set price.
