Swedish electronics manufacturer Teenage Engineering is no stranger to releasing quirky and unusual synthesizers and other electronics, with the recent K.O. II groovebox portable sampler making waves in the electronic music production scene.

The new Teenage Engineering EP–1320 Medieval instrument takes the K.O. II as its foundation but with a unique spin on the concept that draws on the sounds of the Middle Ages. Packed with a plethora of period-accurate samples covering everything from lutes and medieval drums to Gregorian chants, it’s also an impressive resource for sound effects.

Foley effects available through the Teenage Engineering EP–1320 Medieval instrument include a broad selection of medieval weapons, such as swords and arrows, as well as various farm animals and even screaming peasants. In addition to the 999 slots dedicated to samples, it also features an internal microphone to allow users to create their own, with the option to load in more via the USB-C connection.

The device itself is compact and designed with a retro calculator aesthetic, featuring prominent raised buttons and medieval-style fonts, with the key buttons and knobs in bright orange for ease of use in dark clubs. Velocity-sensitive keys are complemented by an LED screen, and the overall workflow is geared toward newbies rather than experienced producers.

With 12 mono and 6 stereo voice polyphony, 6 built-in FX sends with a punch-in mode, and a master compressor, the Teenage Engineering EP–1320 Medieval instrument is a dedicated music production machine with plenty of scope, all for just $300.
