Nearly two decades after the original Core, Suunto has resisted turning its successor into another notification screen. The Suunto Core 2 arrives in the United States as a dedicated altimeter, barometer, and compass watch with a replaceable battery rated for up to 15 months.

The 49mm reinforced-composite case is 14.8mm thick and weighs 56.5 grams before its 22mm silicone strap. A 1.3-inch monochrome dot-matrix display is 40 percent brighter than the original and sits beneath Corning Gorilla Glass. Red and green backlight options help control glare at night, while raise-to-wake makes quick checks less dependent on buttons. Water resistance rises from 3 ATM to 10 ATM, and construction is tested to MIL-STD-810H.

The upgraded ABC suite tracks altitude, ascent, descent, atmospheric pressure, compass bearing, temperature, sunrise and sunset, and moon phase. Improved pressure filtering is intended to reduce false storm warnings. Bluetooth links the watch to the Suunto app for time synchronization, step transfers, settings, and firmware updates, but the essential functions remain available offline. That distinction separates it from a sensor-heavy smartwatch and connects it to the original Suunto Core formula.
The Core 2 launches in the U.S. on August 20 for $199 in an all-black configuration. It is available through Suunto and authorized retailers.
