Sonus faber’s wood-infused designs are taking a backseat to its forthcoming first outdoor excursion. While this may disappoint longtime fans of the speakers’ iconic appearance, unlike its indoor cousins, the new Aster Outdoor Speaker isn’t intended to stand out. It’s pleasant-looking, sure, but the black and white color profiles help these speakers blend in with the existing decor, keeping revelers’ focus on outdoor fun and meticulous landscaping.
The Aster Outdoor Speakers are IP65-certified, so they’ll withstand everything from airborne dust to a direct blast from a garden hose or wayward sprinkler. The slim shape evokes an organic look inspired by the sky itself – appropriate, given the name comes from the Latin maxim Per aspera ad astra, or “through hardships to the stars.” Given Sonus Faber’s outstanding audio quality, the only hardship owners of these speakers are likely to encounter is deciding what to listen to next.
Speaking of which, the 100W, 2-way Aster has a solid sound range thanks to a 5.81 in low-frequency transducer and a 1.07 in mid/high-frequency transducer. Each speaker weighs just over 9 lbs and puts out 88dB of good times. Aster also makes it easy to adjust sound travel angles. Its internal spring mechanism allows for movement of 15 degrees at a time, no screw adjustments necessary. One thing that users can’t change is Aster’s positioning: this is not a wireless speaker. The Sonus faber Aster Outdoor Speakers will retail for $460 each at launch in the spring.
