A collector nickname rarely becomes an official Rolex model name. The Perpetual Padellone does exactly that, reviving the identity of the coveted reference 8171 while giving Rolex’s classical Perpetual line its first annual calendar and moonphase.
The Perpetual Padellone measures 39mm and comes in 18-karat Everose gold or 950 platinum. Day and month appear through twin apertures at 12 o’clock, a blue-tipped central hand reads the peripheral date, and the moonphase at six uses meteorite for the lunar discs.
The annual calendar’s patented Haplos system distinguishes 30- and 31-day months, requiring correction only when February turns to March. All three calendar indications jump simultaneously at midnight.
Inside, caliber 7190 runs at 5 Hz and provides approximately 66 hours of power reserve. The movement evolves the architecture introduced with the Land-Dweller, adding the calendar mechanism while retaining Rolex’s Dynapulse escapement. Water resistance is 50 meters, and a sapphire caseback exposes the movement.
The Padellone is not a limited edition, which matters for a complication this unusual in Rolex’s modern catalog. Rolex offers it through boutiques and authorized retailers in Everose gold on alligator leather, platinum on leather, or Everose gold on the seven-link Settimo bracelet.
U.S. launch pricing starts at $59,000, with the platinum version at $66,200 and the bracelet model at $72,800.
