Rolex created an experimental timepiece in 2012 to travel with filmmaker James Cameron to the deepest area of the world’s oceans. Cameron descended to 35,787 feet underwater for a record-setting dive to the deepest part of the Mariana Trench, the Challenger Deep.
The Rolex Deepsea Challenge is an extension of Cameron’s experimental watch and is certified to 11,000 meters below the water’s surface. This soon-to-be-iconic dive watch features a 60-minute graduated rotatable bezel that allows divers to safely and precisely time dives and decompressions.
The Rolex Deepsea Challenge offers an intense black dial and luminescent numbers that are remarkably easy to read in the depths of the sea. It is also 30 percent lighter than the watch James Cameron wore on his Mariana Trench expedition. The Rolex-selected grade 5 titanium alloy is anti-corrosive, resists deformation and is comfortable to wear.
There’s no denying the Rolex Deepsea Challenge is for divers, but its aesthetics can impress any watch enthusiast. The RLX titanium Oyster bracelet features the Rolex signature Glidelock system and Fliplock extension link. The bracelet is sophisticated enough for an executive-level meeting but can quickly adjust to fit over a 7mm diving suit. The new Rolex Deepsea Challenge is priced at $26,000.
