Chevrolet Colorado ZH2 Military Fuel Cell Vehicle

Chevrolet unveils the Colorado ZH2 fuel cell vehicle set to commence military field testing.

The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (MHHWV), more commonly known as the Humvee or Hummer H1 in civilian form, is getting a bit long in the tooth. Although highly capable, it’s a dinosaur of a vehicle that’s not doing any good for the environment, its practicality and usefulness may be pushing its limits compared to more modern offerings. Set to undergo military testing next year, the Chevrolet Colorado ZH2 is a fuel cell vehicle that looks to test the viability of hydrogen-powered vehicles for military missions.

This bad ass vehicle for the military rides on a reinforced stretched midsize pickup chassis wearing 37-inch tires on modified specially suspension to tackle all types of terrain. Not only is the hydrogen power clean and more efficient, the solid torque performance should benefit the military in various missions. The vehicle is powered by an Exportable Power Take-Off (EPTO) unit that provides power for the vehicle but can also be used away from the vehicle in remote locations where a power source can be scarce. Although this vehicle won’t be available at your local Chevy dealer anytime soon, fuel cell technology and other lessens learned from this military application eventually trickling down to consumer products is an exciting prospect to look forward to.
