Playmaji’s Polymega retro gaming system is finally getting a much-requested upgrade a bit later this year: the ability to play Nintendo 64 games via the newly announced Polymega EM05 Ultra Module Set.

Alongside the module, the set includes Playmaji’s RC05 “Ultra Controller,” which melds modern design and the N64 button layout. However, players can also plug in their OEM N64 controllers for an authentic retro experience. Cartridge regionality won’t be an issue: the EM05 will play games from North America, England, and Japan.

Of critical note, aspiring players will need the $549 base Polymega system for the $89 EM05 to work. The base console includes a wireless controller and plays PS1, Saturn, and Sega CD games out of the box. Physical space demands are minimal: the whole setup is about the size of an Xbox One S, no matter the module. Modules swap easily with a button press and include NES, SNES, Genesis, and more.

The default unit comes with 32GB of internal storage, but because of how Polymega avoids the fraught issue of emulation and classic game piracy, players will only have access to about 9GB, so most users will probably want a micro-SD card for additional storage. Games display in 1080p, and while the Polymega does an admirable job of upconverting 2D sprites, 3D models can look a bit jaggy-edged – not that anyone will notice once the “Slappers Only!” action heats up.
