Nigel Cabourn Mechanics Cap

An iconic American design, the Mechanics Cap recreates the hat first worn by US baseball players and later the US military during World War II.

Although widely heralded in the fashion industry as a cult sensation, Great Britain’s Nigel Cabourn has never considered himself a fashion designer. “I don’t follow fashion,” he says. “Everything I design comes from either a moment in history, an inspirational person or a vintage garment.”

Cabourn’s latest release is a direct result of his lifelong passion for collecting vintage sports clothing. An iconic American design, the Mechanics Cap recreates the hat that was first worn by United States baseball players in the 1900s and later adopted by servicemen from various branches of the United States military.

For his re-release of this classic hat, Nigel Cabourn specifically focused on the style of cap that staff mechanics and other American ground forces wore during World War II. Manufactured from 100% cotton Japanese denim, the Mechanics Cap is sewn from six fabric sections to form a round fitted top. An adjustable metal snap fastener at the back makes this one-size-fits-all.
