One of the most common complaints from PC users is a lack of bandwidth, whether you’re a hardcore gamer using a high-end rig or a content creator uploading high volumes of content. Intel looks set to address this universal problem with the release of the Thunderbolt 5, the company’s next-generation laptop dock that promises to deliver vast improvements in bandwidth and connection speeds.

Continuing the company’s trend for manufacturing cutting-edge wired connectivity solutions, the Thunderbolt 5 serves up to 80 gigabits per second of bi-directional bandwidth for optimal display performance. Designed in collaboration with Microsoft and in line with industry standards, it uses USB4 V2 with backward compatibility with previously released Thunderbolt and USB versions.

Additional improvements over Thunderbolt 4 include a doubling of the PCI Express data, delivering faster storage and enhanced external graphics, along with the latest PAM-3 signaling technology. This allows for a new level of high-speed PC-to-PC connections that gamers and other computer-based professionals can take advantage of whether they’re working or playing.

It’s another welcome iteration from Intel’s long-standing series of Thunderbolt products that have established a dominant position in the mainstream PC marketplace. Intel has embraced the possibilities of what a single USB-C port and cable can accomplish, earning its place as a globally recognized leader in connectivity solutions.

The company has further plans built around the Thunderbolt 5 in the pipeline, with a line of computers and accessories based around the Thunderbolt 5 controller due for release in 2024.
