Hyundai has revealed the Boulder Concept at the 2026 New York International Auto Show, signaling a decisive shift toward rugged, body-on-frame vehicles tailored for the American market. Positioned as an SUV design study, the Boulder Concept previews the platform that will underpin Hyundai’s first midsize pickup truck, expected to arrive by 2030.

Unlike Hyundai’s current unibody lineup, the Boulder adopts a traditional ladder-frame architecture—long favored for off-road durability, towing strength, and overall versatility. The design reflects what Hyundai calls its “Art of Steel” philosophy, emphasizing both structural integrity and sculptural form. The result is a deliberately upright, two-box silhouette with a commanding presence and a clear focus on capability.

Functionality drives nearly every detail. The concept rides on oversized 37-inch mud-terrain tires and features generous ground clearance, optimized approach and departure angles, and a deep fording capability for serious off-road use. A dual-hinged tailgate, power drop-down rear window, and integrated roof rack with steel webbing suggest a vehicle designed as much for work as for recreation.

Inside, the emphasis shifts to durability and usability. Physical controls, reinforced grab points, and configurable elements such as fold-out tray tables point to a cabin built for real-world conditions rather than abstraction.

More than a concept, Boulder represents Hyundai’s broader ambition: a new generation of vehicles designed, developed, and built in America, using U.S.-produced steel. It marks the brand’s intent to compete directly in one of the most competitive segments in the U.S. market—one defined not by efficiency alone, but by capability, resilience, and lifestyle alignment.
