The original Mercedes-Benz CLS ushered in an era of automotive oxymoron by introducing the “four-door coupe.” It combined the elegant design of a two-door coupe while retaining the practicality of a four-door sedan. Despite the strange categorization, the CLS was a hit for Mercedes, with other manufacturers soon following suite.
With the second generation CLS getting long in its tooth, Mercedes-Benz introduces an all-new CLS for the modern era.
The new 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS features an all-new look that retains its signature proportions, while adapting a more modern and aggressive look. While the sleek exterior embraces the coupe-like silhouette, the interior betrays its E-Class underpinnings, with a familiar but still beautiful design. The new CLS even has more seats with a three-person bench at the rear compared to the previous generation’s four seat configuration, much like the E-Class.
Under the hood, Mercedes is bringing back the inline six with the new CLS, a trend that will soon be seen in other models. This new turbo-charged engine produces 362-hp and 369 ft-lbs of torque. The inline six motor also comes with an electric starter and generator, aiding the engine with short bursts of power that will get the car to 60 in about 4.8 seconds. Only the 6-cylinder CLS450 has been revealed for now, but you can be sure that a fire-breathing AMG variant will soon follow.
As expected, the car is packed with the newest technological innovations, ranging from full-digital gauge display, 64-color ambient lighting, to driver assistance features like lane-keep assist, active collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, and more.
The new 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS will be available in the fall of 2018, with exact pricing available closer to that date.
