The current generation Mercedes-Benz SL never lived up to the expectation of the German manufacturer or it’s fans. It was simply too unattractive to wear the three-pointed star, with a lackluster exterior and a plain interior. Compared to the previous generation’s (internal code R230) launch back in 2003, when the waiting list was as long as two years, the current R231 felł behind on the desirability factor.
Mercedes-Benz finally gives the current SL a much needed facelift and will show off the 2017 Mercedes-Benz SL at the LA Auto Show. The 2017 Mercedes-Benz SL retains its basic shape and amazing retractable hardtop, but features new design cues like the inverted grill that is wider at the bottom, a first on any Mercedes-Benz model. The car’s facelift improves the look of the car by capturing the finesse that seemed to have been missing from the SL-Class since 2008. Although it may not be as drop dead gorgeous as the S-Class Coupe, the rounder edges are more inline with the current design language at Mercedes. The rear end virtually stays the same, with only new light cluster graphics and a different diffuser for the bumper. The interior is also left almost untouched, with a new steering wheel and a larger infotainment screen being the only major changes.
With Mercedes-Benz being a caretaker of such a legendary name in motoring history as the SL, the stakes are high and their efforts are going to be judged at a much higher scrutiny. The 2017 Mercedes-Benz SL is by no means a bad car; it’s just a shame that it’s a descendant of automotive royalties like the Gullwing and Pagoda SL.
