Originally intended for sale only in Japan, the Evolution series was custom-made to allow Mitsubishi to compete in the World Rally Championship (WRC). This initial rally car set the standard for all Mitsubishi Evo models to come with its turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine, its four-wheel drive capabilities, and its arresting body design.
Considering the Mitsubishi’s dominance of the WRC with the Evo from 1996 to 1999, it remains a mystery why it took Mitsubishi so long to make the vehicle available outside of the Japanese market. The 1999 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI GSR currently on sale through the UK’s Silverstone Auctions is an example of the first official Evo to reach Europe and the first to enter the broad consciousness of international rally enthusiasts.
Exceptionally preserved and maintained, this original 1999 release has covered just 34,800 miles under the ownership of just four private owners over the course of two decades. Destined to become a modern classic, this will be a legendary sale among Evo fans worldwide.
