The McLaren F1 is a rare supercar that leaves even the most ardent critics speechless. Its flawless design is as mind-blowing on the racetrack as it is on the showroom floor. From the sultry curvature of its exterior design to its unrivaled performance in competition, the legend of this supercar is set in stone.
When Gordon Murray left the Brabham Formula 1 team to join McLaren in 1987, he left the industry buzzing about how his addition would shift the axis of power in the racing world. Even with that anticipation, no one could have expected how poignant the move would become in defining McClaren’s legacy. The company’s ownership knew how important it was to seize that opportunity. As such, Murray’s arrival saw him tasked with a daunting challenge — the creation of the perfect automobile. That was the standard set by Mansour Ojjeh, the architect of Murray’s arrival and the owner of McLaren. That pursuit of perfection resulted in a car that set the industry standard to which successors are still compared till this day.
The lightweight monocoque chassis is built from a carbon fiber and aluminum honeycomb cell. It’s three-seat configuration with a centered driver’s seat was the first of its kind. Its roaring V-12 engine was an upgraded version of the inline-six that McClaren had outfitted its competition cars with for years. The enhanced performance turned out an insane 627 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.
The company would go on to produce only 64 models through 1997, making the car one of the most sought after in history by collectors. This 1994 McLaren F1 ‘LM-Specification’ has been owned by a well-respected collector based in Singapore. This modestly driven McLaren is in superb condition with only 13,352 miles on its odometer. Lot 261 in RM Sotheby’s August automotive auction will give bidders a rare opportunity to own one of F1’s greatest achievements.
