Swiss watchmaker, Tudor, has just unveiled its latest addition to the FXD family, the Tudor Pelagos FXD Black. This new watch features a sleek black dial and bezel, following the same design philosophy as the Marine Nationale FXD released in late 2021. With a flat 12.7mm thick, 42mm titanium case and a fixed lug design, the Pelagos FXD Black exudes an aura of sophistication and durability.
While this timepiece doesn’t have an official affiliation, it made its debut alongside a display showcasing the brand’s rich history in issued watches, fittingly located next to the original Sealab I at the Man In The Sea Museum in Panama City, Florida. This setting pays homage to an era when watches like the FXD were indispensable tools, serving as reliable companions for divers just like compasses or knives.
The black FXD incorporates a touch of red text at the bottom of the dial, a feature seen in the Pelagos 39 released the previous year. This red accent not only adds a pop of color but also reduces the visual weight of the text at the dial’s bottom. The matte black dial and bezel insert maintain a minimalist aesthetic, distinguishing the FXD from its predecessors.
One significant change in the Pelagos FXD Black is the unidirectional elapsed time bezel, a departure from the previous bidirectional design. The watch comes with a sturdy khaki strap featuring a single red stripe down the center, enhancing its overall appeal.
Inside the watch, Tudor continues to impress with its in-house caliber MT5602, known for its smooth winding action and reliability. While it is COSC certified, the absence of METAS certification in this release leaves room for speculation about future developments in Tudor’s dive watch range. The Tudor Pelagos FXD Black is now available from Tudor retailers at a price of $4,150, including an additional black rubber pass-through strap.
