Japanese watchmaker Seiko released its first dive watch in 1965, and its popularity grew from there. Seiko quickly became a top name among recreational and professional divers around the globe. State-of-the-art features, designs, and innovations are a few of the many reasons.
This June, Seiko is bringing back a classic, beloved design with advancements in line with the year 2023. The 1968 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation GMT mimics the company’s 1968 Diver’s Watch but with a gold GMT hand, an underwater-visible Lumibrite dial, 200 meters of water resistance, and a scratch-resistant ceramic bezel. The new automatic Caliber 6R54 allows the GMT function and offers a power reserve of three days. It’s the original 1968 version, just a whole lot better.
The Seiko 1968 Diver’s Watch design is much of what attracted divers, and the company kept much of its heritage. The case design resembles that of 1968, but it features mirror-finished sides, and the bezel is easy to control. The 42mm stainless steel case features an extra-durable coating to endure years of wear and tear.
The classically-styled Seiko Prospex 1968 Diver’s Modern Re-interpretation GMT is available in a choice of green or black dials with a slim and comfortable stainless steel bracelet. These two watches sell for $1,500. There is also a limited-edition watch that celebrates the 110th anniversary of Seiko’s, and Japan’s, first wristwatch. Distinguished by an intricately textured ice-blue dial, this watch captures the power of the polar glaciers that shape the landscapes and seascapes of the Arctic and Antarctic. This watch is priced at $1,700 and only 4,000 units will be made.
