We expected months to go by before Rolls-Royce unveiled its next coachbuilt car. Much to our surprise, the 4th model in the series was released, the Rolls-Royce Amethyst Droptail. This coachbuilt convertible RR adopts the Amethyst moniker with a theme inspired by the birthstone of the owner’s son.
Painted in Globe Amaranth, the visually calming shade of purple features flecks of powdered aluminum. Further inspection of the paintwork reveals a metallic sheen blending red, blue, and violet mice flakes. This is the first Rolls-Royce to feature a brushed and polished finish on a Pantheon grille with kinked vanes at the top. According to RR, over 50 hours were spent giving this grille its finish partially by hand. The cherry on the bottom of this gem is a set of 22-inch wheels wearing body-colored accents.
At the rear, the Amethyst Droptail veneer aft deck is the largest wood surface ever fitted to a Rolls-Royce. Accomplishing this required over 8,00 hours of running tests on more than 150 wood samples to find one that could withstand harsh climates. The deck was then treated in a specially formulated protective coat.
Inside, the Rolls-Royce Amethyst Droptail features amethyst gems in the rotary dials and at the base of the Spirit of Ecstasy figurine, in addition to woven leather floor mats and a one-of-a-kind, handmade Vacheron Constantin timepiece. The removable hardtop features an electrochromic glass that can go from purple tint opaque to transparent at the touch of a button.
Weirdly, RR did not say what was lurking under the hood of the Amethyst Droptail. However, we assume it’s the 6.7-liter V12 producing a healthy 593 horsepower and 620 pound-feet of torque.
