Rivian is carving out a dedicated space for performance experimentation with the launch of the Rivian Adventure Department (RAD). This internal division is tasked with taking lessons from competitions like the Rebelle Rally and Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and translating them into tunable features for owners. RAD’s engineers have developed a Tuner interface that lets drivers of the R1T and R1S Gen 2 Quad‑Motor models adjust power output, torque bias, brake regeneration and stability control on the fly, effectively tailoring the vehicles for sand, snow or asphalt without waiting for over‑the‑air updates.

At the same time, the department is creating bespoke drive modes inspired by motorsport. Desert Rally mode, derived from desert racing, sharpens throttle response and loosens traction control for controlled slides, while Hill Climb mode increases cooling for extended full‑throttle blasts. Rivian says these settings are born from the punishment its vehicles endure in competition. RAD will showcase its innovations at the 2026 FAT Ice Race in Big Sky, Montana, where prototypes will run against a field of classic and modern machines on frozen terrain.

By building a laboratory within its own ranks, Rivian signals that performance and adventure are integral to its brand ethos. The RAD initiative also underscores a willingness to give customers deeper access to vehicle parameters traditionally locked away. While the broader market debates efficiency and range, Rivian is reminding enthusiasts that electric vehicles can be tuned like their combustion‑powered predecessors.
