Long gone are the days of the kitschy birdhouse projects of our school days, with the introduction of the OTHR Birdhaus. The design collective has long been recognized for incorporating emerging talent and seasoned design professionals to create interesting, aesthetically-pleasing, and functional products made from innovative practices such as 3D printing.
The label’s Birdhaus is no exception. OTHR took the traditional birdhouse and turned it on its head with a limited edition structure made from 3D printed porcelain. The innovative process to create this beautiful, yet entirely useful piece combines 3D fabrication and hand finishing. Each one is completely made to measure after the purchase in a two to three-week manufacturing process so that the birdhouse arrives to the final user with a unique number.
Aside from this appealing and specific design process, OTHR was inspired to recreate the traditional birdhouse out of a commitment to a healthier, more sustainable environment. After analyzing research that showed that a single bird can consume up to 3,500 mosquitos a day, the brand wanted to create the structure to be a more efficient bug repellent for the modern home. And though it doesn’t look like a grade school craft project, the Birdhaus still retains some of the same elements and dimensions of the classic model.
The Birdhaus is constructed out of an outer shell and inner shell for easy separation and cleaning. Not only is it a safe place for birds to rest and enjoy, but it is a beautiful piece of design to have in your home.
