Last summer, the release of London-based startup Nothing’s smartphone, the Nothing Phone (1), the minimalist, environment-conscious device, created a stir in the UK and European markets. Nothing’s streamlined design goes beyond its manufacturing, promising its operating system is free from “bloatware,” running a streamlined, battery-efficient environment.
Now the manufacturer is selling memberships granting access to a Nothing Phone (1) Black 8 + 128GB and the still-in-testing “Nothing 1.5 Beta” operating system, which is powered by Android 13 beta. Members also receive a “Nothing Black Dot” NFT for their CryptoWallet, granting access to exclusive deals and the Nothing Discord server. Subscribers will receive patches and updates as they are released, including the final operating system version.
“The program will last through June 30, 2023, after which the final version of the operating system can be installed. The phone is yours to keep,” according to Nothing’s program FAQ. Nothing is quick to point out that the program exists due to their need to beta test the new operating system on the specific phone provided. The program guidelines state that users may not use any other phone model or memory capacity. Furthermore, the company warns that beta products can be unpredictable and is not responsible for malfunctions.
Since its release, Nothing has expanded its market to include limited compatibility with North American carriers, none of which will support the faster 5G connectivity. (Buyers should check compatibility before purchasing in the FAQ section.)
