Various forms of the iconic Volkswagen Beetle have been in production for 80 years, but it seems that this glorious run has finally come to an end. At the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in Geneva, Switzerland, Volkswagen’s Head of Technical Development indicated that this year’s Beetle would be the last, as the company has no plans to continue the line in the midst of its waning popularity.
If you are one of the Beetle’s many surviving champions, however, the Bavarian automotive restoration company Memminger has some great news. After working on existing beetles for roughly 20 years, Memminger has announced plans to build its first vehicle from the ground up. And it should come as no surprise that this vehicle is taking the shape of the high-performance Beetle of the future.
The proposed Memminger Roadster 2.7 retains the classic look of the Beetle while supercharging it with aggressive lines, sporty curves, a lengthened wheelbase, and a striking rear spoiler. Under the hood, the Roadster 2.7 features an air-cooled 2.7-liter, four-cylinder boxer engine that can churn out an impressive 210 horsepower.
While the Roadster 2.7 currently exists solely as a concept vehicle, Memminger has indicated that it may produce 20 units for sale if the interest is there. Given the ravenous appetite of dedicated Beetle fans, this is a short order indeed!
