Hypercar fans wondering how the Nineties’ fabled McLaren F1 LM would stack up against Gran Turismo’s Solus GT will soon be able to role-play out the answer thanks to LEGO’s forthcoming Speed Champions McLaren Solus GT and McLaren F1 LM building set.
This isn’t LEGO’s first rodeo with McLaren, but including the Solus marks the first time one of the Speed Champions kits has been modeled on a car that, until recently, only existed in a video game. Both vehicles are true to form and feature clever LEGO replacement details, like a video game controller standing in for the Solus’ steering wheel as a nod to the hypercar’s digital origin.
The 581-piece set includes two minifig drivers, both branded with thoughtful touches of the cars’ papaya orange livery. The male minifig is apparently a Big Tech CEO who didn’t think twice about hopping into a McLaren wearing a hoodie and jeans. The female is a bit more prepared with her racing suit. In a welcome, playful touch, rotating her head alternates her expression between confident and “Oh sh*t, that’s right! I get to drive a McLaren!”
Look: everyone knows LEGO is cool, especially when they’re offering two iconic whips at a was-this-a-typo $35 price point. Don’t overthink it as LEGO has just dropped the kit – unless eventually paying double on eBay sounds like fun.
