LEGO is adding to its extensive stable of car and truck brick models with the October release of the LEGO Ford F-150 Raptor. The bright orange brick pickup consists of 1,379 pieces and measures 6-inches high x 17-inches wide x 8-inches deep. The body has doors, a hood, and a tailgate, all of which actually open. Under that hood is a little V6 engine with moving pistons, just like the real thing. It’s all suspended on a chassis with real shocks and springs. The F-150 Raptor suspension setup seems fairly accurate, with independent front suspension and a solid rear axle at the back. It has functional steering, too, which is controlled via a little wheel on the roof for easy maneuvering around your desk or floor.
The LEGO Ford F-150 Raptor falls under the company’s Technic arm of assembly bricks. The Technic line uses interconnecting plastic rods along with the scattered traditional bricks to create more complicated shapes than would normally be permitted by square LEGO pieces alone. Most kits of this type don’t deploy many — if any — typical bricks, creating what enthusiasts call ‘studless’ construction, which is a term used by the company to denote those little round nubs that appear on the top of traditional LEGO bricks. The Technic line lends itself well to the recreation of beefy suspension parts, and the F-150’s lantern jaw styling works fine with the squared-off profile of LEGO bricks. LEGO’s Ford F-150 Raptor is available to preorder now, with delivery expected on October 1st.
