Swiss watchmaker Hublot launched two new tourbillon watches this week that capture all seven colors of the rainbow. Named the Big Bang Integral Tourbillon Rainbow, the 43 mm pieces will come in a choice of King Gold or white gold and are set with nearly 36 carats of various gems. The King Gold version gives a warm glow, which the brand also cleverly incorporates in the dial by making the hands and micro-rotor from the same material. White gold gives a cooler look, and both metals interact in their own unique way with the 484 invisibly-set stones on the watch, which brings to mind the seven shades of the rainbow’s spectrum. Among them are bright red rubies, fuchsia pink sapphires, ultraviolet amethysts, topaz in Klein blue, leaf green tsavorites, lemon yellow sapphires, and bright orange sapphires. Since the watches have a generous diameter of 43mm, Hublot has plenty of space to create a very subtle gradient between the colors, coming as close to its natural counterpart as possible.
While the setting alone makes this watch a stand-out, the movement is like the icing on the cake. Caliber HUB6035 is made in-house at Hublot’s manufacture and features a tourbillon, as well as a micro-rotor crafted from gold. These elements create a very pleasing symmetry, as the watch lacks a traditional dial. Instead, Hublot is working with bridges made from transparent sapphire crystal, tying in another area of expertise from the innovative brand. The Hublot Big Bang Integral Tourbillon Rainbow costs a hefty $790,000, which actually seems fair given the materials, expertise, and 1200 hours of work that goes into selecting, cutting, and setting the stones for every piece.
