The owner and principal architect of Portugal’s Paulo Martins Arquitectura & Design, Paulo Martins has built a reputation for creating state-of-the-art residences, offices, and institutions that stress the aesthetics of urbanism and the values of ecological efficiency. One of his latest projects, Garagem houses vehicles instead of people, and the results are frankly remarkable.
Automotive collectors know that their prized possessions are much more than just vehicles. They are works of art, and Garagem treats them as such, resembling a contemporary gallery far more than a traditional garage. Located in an open area on a private property in Agueda, Portugal, this exceptional garage predates the construction of the home to which it will ultimately belong. If the home follows the trends set by its garage, it will be exceptional indeed.
Composed of a series of dark grey lacquered aluminum sheets, Garagem resembles a masterwork of minimalist sculpture from the outside. Its exterior industrial overtones serve as a perfect reflection of the mechanical and technological marvels that it contains. It also conjures images of a futuristic military-grade bunker that protects items of incredible power and value.
Garagem’s dour exterior belies an interior that is absolutely brilliant and luminous. Bright white with pedestals of jet black, this interior space follows the lead of the world’s leading modern museums and galleries, creating a striking but simple environment that succeeds in augmenting but not distracting from the beautiful artwork within.
