The automotive industry is doing a tricky balancing act these days. With stricter emissions standards and rising pressure for more fuel efficient vehicles, there seems to be very little room for vehicles that can satisfy driving enthusiasts. Things get even more tricky when you consider how we commute to the city. The Electra Meccanica Solo was born with the lofty goal of satisfying all of the above; an environmentally friendly electric car for the urban commuter that enjoys driving.
As the name may suggest, the Electra Meccanica Solo is a single passenger car, set out to revolutionize how we commute in the city. The synchronous electric motor that generates 82 HP and 140 ft-lb of torque is powered by a lithium-ion battery that provides a range of 100 miles on a single charge. Priced from $15,500 with first deliveries expected in 2017, it’s even more affordable than the upcoming Tesla Model 3, although it does lose out to the Tesla in terms of space. It may be non-polluting, economical, and even fun to drive, but we’re not too sure if the design is pleasing to the eyes, looking like a car that’s been drawn only half-way. We’ll have to see whether the public can embrace this strange looking urban commuter for what it is.
