If the summer heat in New York City and Los Angeles seems to be causing some to seek out…well… a refreshing (and slightly disturbing) treat, Brooklyn prankster art collective MSCHF has launched a new drop that will allow participants to “eat the rich” – in the form of a frozen dessert, at least. Five versions of the Eat the Rich popsicles are available featuring ice cream molded and named versions of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos (“Bite Bezos”), Former Alibaba chairman Jack Ma Yun (“Snack on Jack”), Microsoft founder/philanthropist Bill Gates (“Gobble Gates”), Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg (“Suck Zuck”), and entrepreneur and world’s richest man Elon Musk (“Munch Musk”). Each popsicle costs $10 during the limited-edition drop.

“Eat the Rich” hails from the 1793 French Revolution where widespread starvation popularized the saying “When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich!” – a phrase widely attributed to philosopher Jean-Jacque Rousseau. In recent years, the anti-capitalist movement has co-opted the phrase “Eat the rich!” as a rallying cry for those who blame a variety of society’s problems on a widening wealth gap.

This means that as the world’s richest person, Elon Musk, battles out the terms of his withdrawal from a recent agreement to buy social media giant Twitter, the social media company’s board can fight back by eating his likeness in ice cream form, even though they might prefer to watch it melt into an anti-capitalist puddle on the sidewalk. Eat the Rich popsicles will only be available at Eat the Rich trucks at assorted locations in New York City and Los Angeles from Monday, July 11 through Wednesday, July 13, 2022.
