A man’s everyday carry choices are deeply personal. For one of our editors Sonny Kwon, these are the things that he can’t leave home without.
For more detail with pictures for each item, read on.
Multitool: Nite Ize DoohicKey Key Tool
Tools are only usable if it’s with you. I use this as a screwdriver, box cutter, wrench, and beer opener (but mostly as a beer opener).
Phone: Sony Xperia Z5 Compact
I’ve had three Sony phones up till now (all the way back from the Sony Ericsson days). Am I an Xperia fanboy? I’m not sure. I admit there are many other great performing phones out there from various makers, but to me, phones are phones; they’re not racing bikes where every bit of detail is a matter of winning and losing. It doesn’t matter what phone anyone uses, so I choose to exercise my creative freedom where I can. I have my specific wants: uniqueness and compactness. As a result, I’ve never had to wonder in a group setting which phone was mine. I can also operate it with one hand, and it fits in any pocket.
I don’t use a case or a protective screen. I like the look that the original designers came up with, without any superfluous touches. As for the “protective” part of the case that I’m missing, I can’t drop my phone if it’s in my pocket. If somehow I do happen to drop it, that’s fine. This isn’t a lifetime investment. Usually with these gadgets, the internals bite the dust before the actual hardware (due to firmware updates that render old devices obsolete), so if it lasts me 3 or 4 years, I’m more than happy. As an innately cautious person, I would rather risk dropping it than carry an ugly thing every single day for several years of my life.
When this one kicks the bucket, I’m thinking about getting one of those really minimalist phones. But who knows, I might buy another Sony.
Lip balm: Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm
I lost track of how many of these I have. Probably not enough.
Wallet: Fendi Monster Eyes Leather Bifold
Quality leather, quirky yet modest design. Having a nice wallet and a nice watch just makes me feel good. I only wish it were a bit smaller, since I only use half of the eight card slots.
Watch: Junghans Max Bill Automatic
This isn’t my everyday watch per se, as I swap watches and straps every chance I get. All my watches are great everyday watches — classic, versatile, and great-looking. Believe it or not, this is a strap monster. I’ll go into more detail in a future “Watch Collection” video.
Cologne: Prada Infusion d’Homme EDT 3.4oz
Like the watch, this one isn’t my only everyday cologne. But it’s one that is capable of being the perfect everyday cologne. Prada does clean, soapy scents very well, and I can’t wait to use this one up for an excuse to buy another Prada fragrance.
