Ah, Halloween. The holiday where we not only allow for debauchery and disguises, we actively encourage them. Everyone has that friend who goes all out for October 31st, but we prefer to go a bit more low-key, using items we already own when possible and supplementing with a few small things to make the costume pop. Here are our favorite culturally relevant and easy-to-achieve costumes of 2019.
Referee (aka Whistleblower)
A referee is a fairly common costume, but this year it takes on a whole new meaning. With an impeachment inquiry dominating the new cycle, whistleblowers are in the public eye like almost never before. Just throw on a striped shirt and grab a whistle and you’ll have one of the most culturally-relevant costumes of the year. Plus, the you’ll have the ability to call any and all party fouls.
Men in Black
Looking for a simple couples costume? It doesn’t get much easier than Agents M and H from Men In Black: International. Chances are you already own a black suit (but if not, scroll down for some good options). So all you need is your Standard Issue Sidearm. While you could splurge on a Limited Edition 1:1 Scale Prop Replica, we think a laser gun will do the trick.
Karl Lagerfeld
For the fashion conscious among us, 2019 will be remembered as the year that we lost iconic designer Karl Lagerfeld. This is one costume where the devil is in the details. Channel his look with a simple black suit and tie and then add his signature accessories. Big sunglasses, a few necklaces, and those driving gloves. Finish it off with a white wig pulled back into a low ponytail. Bonus points if you can convince an actress supermodel to be your date.
Mr. Rogers
Mr. Rogers has always been a fan favorite, but the beloved children’s show host has been in the news more than usual the past few years with the 2018 HBO documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and the feature film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood starring Tom Hanks, which comes on on November 22nd. (Also for the sexy Mr. Rogers costume that we’re just going to pretend doesn’t exist.) Get the look easily with a red cardigan, khakis, and a plaid tie.
Roger Federer
Roger Federer. Winningest men’s tennis player in history. Humanitarian. Rolex spokesman. All around good guy. Easy Halloween costume. Pick up some tennis whites if you’re going for Wimbledon Federer (recommended), throw on a sweatband, grab your racket, and you’re all set.
