During the recent Geneva Watch Days, De Bethune, the renowned independent watchmaker, introduced a remarkable timepiece that merges futuristic design with celestial aesthetics – the De Bethune DB28XP ‘Kind of Blue’. This latest creation seamlessly blends the sleek elegance of the DB28XP with the captivating magnetic blue hue that gained acclaim through the DB28 ‘Kind of Blue’.

The DB28, celebrated for its distinctive floating lugs, crown at noon, and a delta mainplate reminiscent of the Starfleet Command logo, serves as the foundation for this avant-garde masterpiece. Crafted in blued titanium, the limited edition DB28XP ‘Kind of Blue’ exhibits the fusion of mechanical prowess and visual allure that is synonymous with De Bethune.

The genesis of De Bethune’s iconic blue color was an experiment with fire, according to master watchmaker and brand founder Denis Flageollet. Utilizing a thermal process traditionally employed to blue steel and iron for rust protection, the team discovered that titanium could also be imbued with this captivating hue.

The DB28XP ‘Kind of Blue’ inherits the slender profile of the DB28XP series, designed to commemorate the brand’s tenth anniversary. The polished grade 5 titanium case measures 43mm in diameter and a mere 8.5mm in thickness. Adaptable mobile lugs and an extra-supple alligator strap ensure optimal comfort.

The dial, a symphony of shapes, layers, and predominantly blue tones showcases blued titanium elements, including the signature triangular delta bridge that grants a view of the twin barrels. The innovative ‘microlight’ pattern emanating from the balance reimagines traditional guilloché decoration.

Beneath the surface, the hand-wound caliber DB2115v12 boasts a power reserve of up to 6 days, stored within two barrels. De Bethune’s patented innovations, such as the titanium balance and triple pare-chute shock-absorbing system, further enhance the movement’s precision.

Limited to just 25 pieces, the De Bethune DB28XP ‘Kind of Blue’ exemplifies the brand’s commitment to pushing horological boundaries, offering enthusiasts a timepiece that marries cosmic inspiration with mechanical excellence. The price of this stellar creation is yet to be confirmed, but its allure is undeniable.
