There seems to be a stigma with concrete being used in residential design, having a reputation of feeling cold and sterile. It really is a shame, as concrete has become one of the most sought after materials in modern architecture, even in residential application. Case in point, the Concrete House by Studio de Lange.
Located in the Israeli district of Rishpon, Studio de Lange designed this minimalist home constructed predominantly in concrete. The result is surprisingly warm and welcoming, unlike the cold and industrial feeling that we normally associate with the material. The concrete is juxtaposed against the clean white walls and expansive glazing that make the most of bringing light into the space as well as the scenic views of the pool and garden area beyond. The house is organized into two zones — the public wing with the entertaining spaces and kitchen is marked by monumental proportions of height and volume, while the private wing contains the bedrooms and office with elongated proportions and lesser height for a more intimate feeling. This play of scale, material, and light reflect the client’s love for art and design, in this intimate yet grand house that perfectly captures the beauty of concrete.
